Gunsmithing – Online Schools and Degree Programs
About Gunsmithing Careers
Gunsmiths maintain, repair and manufacture firearms and firearm parts. Gunsmiths are machinists, woodworkers and artists. They may be employed by the government, sporting goods stores, armories and firearm manufacturers. Some gunsmiths own their own stores and must also be able to run and maintain a business on top of being thoroughly knowledgeable about guns and ammunition.
Accomplished gunsmiths are skilled machinists who can operate machines used for drilling, cutting, carving, plating and grinding. In addition to machining, gunsmiths must also be great woodworkers as many rifles, shotguns and pistols contain wood components. Finally, gunsmiths must also have some artistic flair as they often design guns and components. They also design artwork placed on collector’s guns and novelty firearms (the latter typically displayed and never fired).
In the United States, on average, a gunsmith makes approximately $13.00 per hour. Of course, those responsible for designing, supplying and maintaining firearms for the government, military and law enforcement make significantly more. Many gunsmiths own their own businesses which draw in a significant amount of income. While experience counts in this field, education and skill play a large role in a gunsmith’s earning capacity. A proper education in gunsmithing can set one head and shoulders above the field by acquiring knowledge that typically took years of working in the industry.
Learning online becomes more appealing and sensible to a gunsmith because online programs serve as a learning tool as well as a reference source. Studying for safety exams and certification can be made easier and more convenient by doing so online. Another added benefit of learning online is that there are communities of students who can offer more breadth and input that might not be included in traditional learning materials. Gunsmiths are very passionate about their craft and the world of firearms. Working with one’s passion is a dream and furthering one’s education will only enrich that experience.
