About Medical Transcription Careers
The task of medical transcribers is to transcribe healthcare dictation and prepare patient care documents. Medical transcriptionists can work both from hospitals, clinics, physicians offices ,and from home-based offices. The medical transcriber is an integral part of a medical team since the physician-dictated material they prepare forms a permanent part of a patient’s medical record.
The qualities of clarity, accuracy, consistency, hearing acuity, hand-eye coordination, and typing skills are highly important for medical transcription. Medical transcriptionists also need to understand patient histories, examination records, consultations, and discharge papers. Profound knowledge in medical law and computer skills are other prerequisites for this career.
To become a medical transcriptionist, a student must complete a 2 year associate’s degrees or 1-year certificate program recognized by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those who have already acquired their degrees can go for online refresher courses to update their knowledge and skills.
Medical transription programs generally place special emphasis on medical terminology (including the Greek and Latin origins of the medical terms), anatomy, physiology, lab work, diseases, English punctuation, and grammar to create successful medical transcribers, instructors and supervisors. These medical transcription programs prepare the candidate to take the Certified Medical Transcriptionist exam.
The field of medical transcription is an ever-growing one and the placement rate for certified transcribers has risen to 93% in the last 10 years. A medical transcriber earns approx $14.00 per hour for taking taped medical records from providers and transcribing the details into an electronic file.
