Loved the article! Some other points I have (from past experiences with my kids) are: 1.) you actually need to go to class. Just because the lecture notes are posted on-line, doesn't mean you don't have to show up. Plus, by not showing up, you get into a bad habit and you also won't feel connected with classmates, professors, etc. 2.) You have to find the BALANCE in college life. Yes it's great to party with your friends at the nearby frat house, but you also have to remember the main reason why you are there. Treat college like a job. (I heard this from a Purdue professor at student/parent day and it made so much sense!) Monday through Friday, school is your job. Go to class, study, do homework, go to the library. Get everything done during the week. If you have tackled all of your resposibilities for class, then you can party with your friends. You'll feel better knowing that the assignments for the week are not hanging over your head, especially if you are hung over! Compartmentalize. M-F = college, weekend = friends. That's not to say that during final week or a big project you will be able to keep this schedule. You may have to give up the weekends during that time, but that may happen in your future job also: the boss may ask you to take the big project home over the weekend or you may have to travel over the weekend. Good luck to everyone in college! You can do it!!

[...] Every year millions of bright college students waltz into classes assuming they’ll ace it just like they did in high school. Sadly, the majority of them are wrong, leading to countless hissy fits, sob sessions, and complaints. This isn’t good for students or teachers, so to help everyone out I’ve decided to explain exactly how to get straight A’s in college. It doesn’t require much more work than high school, but it’s a different game and you need to learn the new rules. [universitiesandcolleges.org] [...]

Great tips. I tell my students that "brown nosing" is an important survival skill and that there is nothing wrong with it. As you said, teachers are human too and will react positively to positive behaviors than negative behaviors. Thanks for sharing these.
